How to Choose The Right Program

With over 14,000 treatment facilities out there, it is very difficult to know how to pick the right program. Calling and asking them is not the right path. They will always tell you they have the best program and try their best to sell you on the idea of coming to their program as quickly as possible.

It boils down to gaining enough accurate information to make a good decision. The information can be gained here and by doing other research. Knowing the right questions to ask a program you contact is very important. Once you have the right information, making a good, well-informed choice is much easier.

Here are some guidelines to follow. In general, look for a program that is a “good fit”. A good fit would be a program that seems to match up to the needs and preferences of the person going there. For example, say the person has been diagnosed with or seems to suffer from depression. In that case, you would look for a program that seems to have a strong “dual diagnosis” program. Dual diagnosis means someone who suffers from both a substance abuse and co-occurring psychological condition. Let’s take another example, age and gender can be very important. Some programs have a “gender specific” component. So, if the person has had previous problems with the opposite sex, rehab is NOT the right place to address them, at least not at this level. They might be better off in a gender specific program. As far as age goes, some programs cater to younger clientele, so if the person going to rehab is an older adult they would probably be better off elsewhere. You get the idea.

The Standards of Excellence

  • Evidence-Based Program
  • Medication Assisted Treatment
  • Treat Co-Occurring Disorders
  • Regular 1 to 1 Therapy
  • Quality Licensed Staff
  • Individualized Treatment Plans
  • Holistic Approach
  • Medical Disease Model
  • Strong Aftercare

Ask Good Questions

Asking tough questions will tell you a lot about the quality of their program, and their intake staff. Your liable to learn a lot by putting them “on the spot”.

Try to get as much information about each facility as you can, so that when you weigh the pros and cons you will have all information available to make a good decision. It is also a good idea to take some time and check out any reviews. This will help you to get a better understanding of the possible strengths and weaknesses of the program.

Personalized Treatment Plans

If the program doesn’t offer a personalized treatment plan, don’t even waste your time. Addictions are just symptoms of deeper more complicated problems. A “cookie cutter” approach doesn’t cut it . The only way to overcome an addiction is to uncover what is really at the core of the problem, and work to address these issues. A one-size fits all approach will not take these individualized concerns into account.

Quality of the Staff

One thing that is often overlooked is the quality of the doctors and staff at the facility. A program is about as good as their staff. Ask about the staff’s level of education and experience. A therapist should at least have a Master’s level degree in Behavioral Science and Social Work and the doctor should always be board certified in addiction medicine. Also, the ratio of patients to therapists should be low so that each therapist has the time and energy to provide quality counseling.

Co-occurring Mood Disorders

Most addicts and alcoholics have some other psychiatric condition too. When a person has both a substance abuse and psychiatric disorder, it is called a “co-occurring” condition. Good programs have the mechanism in place to accurately diagnosis these issues and the quality of staff to address them properly.

Other Contributing Factors

12 Step vs. Non 12 Step

The 12 Steps originated by Alcoholics Anonymous, have always been the “core” philosophical standard of the industry. Most programs subscribe to the AA 12 step philosophy. AA is a great program for staying clean and sober, after completing a program. The problem is it does not work for everyone. In fact, according to recent studies it does not work for the majority of people who try it. For some people however, this type of format is not appropriate. If someone is a confirmed atheist or agnostic, then a 12 step format might be a real deterrent. So, more and more facilities are offering a non 12 step alternative which use a strictly secular, therapy-based approach.

Faith Based

The vast majority of these faith-based facilities are Christian. For someone who is a devote Christian, for example, this might be a very good choice. If they have other serious problems, such as psychiatric disorders or an eating disorder, along with their substance alcohol abuse, it might not be such a good choice.

Wilderness

Wilderness programs generally cater to adolescents (under 18). They teach self confidence and self reliance and promote a connection with nature.

Gender Specific

For those concerned about fraternization and possible distractions of the opposite sex, gender specific programs are designed to cater to males or females only. In addition, if a person has a history of sexual problems, then a gender specific program would be recommended.
