Choosing The Right Program
We’ve provided the list of the best drug rehab centers in the United States. The next step, in the process of choosing the right program from the list, is to make the right choice. We like the idea of staying closer to home because the families of the patient should be involved in their treatment.
Close To Home vs. Going Away
Sometimes, however, going away is often something to be seriously considered. Patients are not “lock-down”, so they have the right to walk out at anytime after detox. For example, people who are co-dependent with their significant others can end up driving home to see them and never return. Another case is when they have been to rehab before and relapsed so they benefit from “isolating” themselves by putting some distance between themselves and their home.
Although there is a certain sense of urgency involved, this should be a careful and well thought-out process. The affected person’s life is literally on the line. There can be a big difference between the top treatment centers and all the rest. The best rehab centers for drug and alcohol treatment have a better staff and offer more 1 to 1 therapy. They offer more services and treat each client as an individual person. Most treatment programs do a reasonably decent job of providing treatment. There are some treatment centers who are not interested in providing the very best rehabilitation for each individual client.
Do your own in-depth research by asking good questions. Knowing the right questions to ask a program you contact is very important. Once you have the right information, making a good, well-informed choice is much easier. Here are some guidelines to follow. In general, look for a program that is a “good fit”. A good fit would be a program that seems to match up to the needs and preferences of the person going there. For example, say the person has been diagnosed with or seems to suffer from depression. In that case, you would look for a program that seems to have a strong “dual diagnosis” program. Dual diagnosis means someone who suffers from both a substance abuse and co-occurring psychological condition. Let’s take another example, age and gender can be very important.
Some programs have a “gender specific” component. So, if the person has had previous problems with the opposite sex, rehab is NOT the right place to address them, at least not at this level. They might be better off in a gender specific program. As far as age goes, some programs cater to younger clientele, so if the person going to rehab is an older adult they would probably be better off elsewhere.
Standards of Excellence
Here is a list of criteria which separates the best from all the rest.
- Evidence Based Program
- Use Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT)
- Address Co-Occurring Disorders (Psyche)
- Lots Of 1 to 1 Therapy
- Highly Credentialed Staff
- Individualized Treatment Plans
- Holistic Treatment Approach
- Disease Model
- Strong Aftercare
Ask Hard Questions
Asking tough questions will tell you a lot about the quality of their program, and their intake staff. Your liable to learn a lot by putting them “on the spot”. Try to get as much information about each facility as you can, so that when you weigh the pros and cons you will have all information available to make a good decision. It is also a good idea to take some time and check out any reviews. This will help you to get a better understanding of the possible strengths and weaknesses of the program.
Personalized Treatment Plans
If the program doesn’t offer a personalized treatment plan, don’t even waste your time. Addictions are just symptoms of deeper more complicated problems. A “cookie cutter” approach doesn’t cut it . The only way to overcome an addiction is to uncover what is really at the core of the problem, and work to address these issues. A one-size fits all approach will not take these individualized concerns into account.
Quality of the Staff
One thing that is often overlooked is the quality of the doctors and staff at the facility. Ask about the staff’s level of education and experience. A therapist should at least have a Master’s level degree in Behavioral Science and Social Work and the doctor should always be board certified in addiction medicine. Also, the ratio of patients to therapists should be low so that each therapist has the time and energy to provide quality counseling.
Co-occurring Mood Disorders
Most addicts and alcoholics have some other psychiatric condition too. When a person has both a substance abuse and psychiatric disorder, it is called a “co-occurring” condition. Good programs have the mechanism in place to accurately diagnosis these issues and the quality of staff to address them properly.
12 Step vs. Non 12 Step
The 12 Steps originated by Alcoholics Anonymous, have always been the “core” philosophical standard of the industry. Most programs subscribe to the AA 12 step philosophy. AA is a great program for staying clean and sober, after completing a program. The problem is it does not work for everyone. In fact, according to recent studies it does not work for the majority of people who try it. For some people however, this type of format is not appropriate. If someone is a confirmed atheist or agnostic, then a 12 step format might be a real deterrent. So, more and more facilities are offering a non 12 step alternative which use a strictly secular, therapy-based approach.
The vast majority of these faith-based facilities are Christian. For someone who is a devote Christian, for example, this might be a very good choice. If they have other serious problems, such as psychiatric disorders or an eating disorder, along with their substance alcohol abuse, it might not be such a good choice.
Adolescents programs generally cater to adolescents (under 18). They teach self-confidence, reliance and often promote a connection with nature.
For those concerned about fraternization and possible distractions of the opposite sex, gender specific programs are designed to cater to males or females only. In addition, if a person has a history of sexual problems, then a gender specific program would be recommended.
