Picking The Right Program
Although there is a certain sense of urgency, this should be a well thought-out process. The affected person’s life is literally on the line. There can be a big difference between the top programs and all others.
- Obtain as much information from each facility you contact, as possible. This will make decision-making easier.
- Great programs have super staffs and provide more therapy.
Staying Closer To Home vs. Going Away
Staying closer to home is a good option because a patient’s family should be involved in the treatment process. Sometimes, however, going away is something to be considered. Patients are not “locked-down” meaning they have the right to walk out at anytime after detox.
Personalized Treatment Plans
If the program doesn’t offer a personalized treatment plan, it means they use a “cookie-cutter” approach. Addiction and alcoholism are symptoms of deeper issues. The only ways to overcome addiction is to uncover what is at the core of the problem and then treat it properly.
One thing often overlooked is the quality of staff. Be sure and ask about the staff’s level of education and experience. Therapists should have a master’s level degree in behavioral science or social work. Ideally, the primary doctor should be board certified in addiction medicine.
Be sure and check the ratio of patients to therapists. It should be low so each therapist has enough time and energy to provide quality counseling to each client.
The vast majority of addicts and alcoholics have some other condition, besides substance abuse. When a person has both a substance abuse and psychiatric disorder, it is called a “co-occurring” condition (formerly dual diagnosis). Good programs have the mechanisms in place to accurately address psychiatric concerns. We recommend only good, co-occurring programs.
Be sure and look for a program that is a “good fit”. A good fit is a program that matches up with the specific needs of the person. For example, say the person has been diagnosed with or seems to suffer from depression. In this case look for a facility that has a strong co-occurring program.
The 12-steps originated by Alcoholics Anonymous, have been the industry philosophical standard for over fifty years. Most programs subscribe to AA’s 12 step model. The problem is it does not work for everyone. For some people, the 12-steps are not appropriate. If someone is a confirmed atheist or agnostic, for example, then a 12-step format is potentially a deterrent. Some facilities offer a non 12-step alternative, using a secular, therapy-based model.
For those concerned about fraternization, gender specific programs provide male or female-only options.
There are a few faith-based facilities in the United States most of them are Christian.
Adolescent programs are for treating clients under the age of 18. These facilities teach confidence, reliance and often promote a connection with nature. Some of them treat adolescents only, while others offer both adult and adolescent services.
