Substance Abuse

Substance abuse is a serious and widespread problem that affects millions of people worldwide. It refers to the harmful use of drugs or alcohol, including both legal and illegal. It affects people of all ages, genders, and backgrounds: While certain demographics may be more vulnerable, such as young adults or those with a history of trauma or mental illness, can affect anyone regardless of age, gender, race, or socioeconomic status.

Opioids

Opioid misuse has reached epidemic levels in the United States, with over 450,000 opioid-related overdose deaths reported between 1999 and 2018. Prescription opioids, such as oxycodone and hydrocodone, are often the gateway to opioid addiction, which can lead to heroin use and other dangerous behaviors.

Alcohol

According to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, over 14 million adults in the United States have an alcohol use disorder. Alcohol abuse can lead to a variety of health problems, including liver disease, heart disease, and cancer.

Marijuana

There is a fine line between use and abuse with respect to a psychoactive drug. Look no further than alcohol and try to come up with a definition that will delineate the two. Abuse can be defined as use that leads to significant problems in life related to: problems with work/school, use in dangerous situations (driving a car), substance-related legal problems, or continued substance use that interferes with friendships and/or family relationships. Of course, all of these are part of the definition of addiction as well.

While marijuana is legal for medical or recreational use in many states, it is still regulated at the federal level. Marijuana use has increased in recent years, particularly among young adults. Regular marijuana use can have negative effects on brain development, memory, and mental health. It can lead to physical and mental health problems: It can lead to a range of health problems, including liver disease, heart disease, respiratory problems, and mental health disorders such as anxiety, depression, and psychosis. It can have negative effects on personal and professional relationships: This behavioral can lead to strained personal relationships, loss of employment or other opportunities, and financial problems.
