Pill Identifier

Identifying a pill or capsule a person is not certain about the contents is very important. There are a lot of pills that have alphanumeric and or numbers imprinted on them.

  • Never take a pill or capsule that was not prescribed for you by a licensed medical doctor.

The National Institute of Health (NIH) pas a page on their website of several different methods to help someone investigate a pill or capsule. These methods from the United States Federal Food and Drug Administration and National Institute of Health (NIH) include;

  • Take the unknown pills to your local pharmacy outlet in person and show them to a licensed pharmacist
  • The Food and Drug Administration – Their CDER division will try and help someone to ID a pill or capsule by send them an email.
  • The National Institute of Health also provides a service to try and help a person with this problem.
  • Access to the NIH’s “pillbox” data set.

We DO NOT encourage or advise anyone to try and ID an unknown pill or capsule through any of these options. It is always better to simply throw them away. Never take them unless they were prescribed to you by your doctor.
