Cocaine, Crack Cocaine Detox and Withdrawal

Using cocaine is done by sniffing, snorting, injecting or smoking (crack) it. Cocaine use brings a strong, powerful adrenaline like rush or high and a certain feeling of euphoria. Cocaine users can become quite dependent on these feelings of excitement and exhilaration. This psychological dependency usually is gradual over a period of time. These high feelings do not last long. Depending on a variety of factors, these “high” feelings from cocaine can last anywhere from 10 to 60 minutes. Cocaine is considered an appetite suppressant. People usually will lose weight as a result of regular, long-term cocaine use. Cocaine can also trigger strong sexual stimulation which only adds to the seductive nature of cocaine use.

Detox and withdrawal from cocaine (crack cocaine)

Cocaine (crack) is water-soluble and therefore disperses through and out of the body quickly. Just like the relatively quick high feelings it brings to the mind, cocaine does not stay in the physical body very long either. Consequently, there is no actual, technical, medical detox process for physical detox from cocaine. Although not a physical detox process, the psychological withdrawal, detox process is still an important component of the initial stages of recovering form cocaine addiction and dependence. Cocaine users usually experience some sort of psychological withdrawal, detox symptoms as a result of initially being without cocaine. The rebound effect from being on a binge of using cocaine can make a person feel extremely low and show symptoms of depression. This psychological dependency issue and resulting effects need to be addressed while a person is going through detox, withdrawal from cocaine use. Cocaine is always “cut”, reducing its strength and purity. This “cutting” process is done with a variety of substances, including vitamin B and baby laxative. These products can have their own toxic effect on the human body and may require some type of stabilization process. Binges, or long periods of consistently using cocaine, can have its own serious, physical consequences. Binges can last for days at a time and the participants stay up all night doing cocaine. These are all important issues in the initial detox, withdrawal and stabilization prior to a person being prepared to participate in rehab for cocaine abuse.
